I'm going to sound like my grandmother. Here it goes.
I'm really disgusted with a lot of the music out there today. And I know a majority of people aren't going to agree with me because they love Taylor Swift, and the Jonas Brothers, and Kesha (or is it Ke$ha?) Beiber fever, and whatever else has graced the top 20 chart in the past few years.
I'm just not a fan. I still view music as an art form-- and that doesn't mean there is no room for fun, dance music, or music that is funny (personally I love LMFAO); I just prefer to hear bands with soul, and talent getting the same recognition as those who spew out lines about cheating, and getting drunk.
Well I think music was meant to be art... right?
Seriously? "Don't be a little bitch with your chit chat- just show me where your dick at"??
I can't believe garbage like this is popular. And what's worse, is that my 11 year old cousin loves this stuff! What message is this sending to younger kids-- and young girls for that matter?
Oh. Exactly what it says. To party, get drunk, and be a slut. Cool.
I've always liked to find music before it goes mainstream-- and music that goes against the norm of today. Lately I've been listening to Mumford & Sons and The Black Keys. Both bands have a really cool and different sound to them; and they're lyrics are so.... lyrical. Which is something you don't get much on the radio today. I'm glad to see that Mumford & Sons is getting some popularity, and notoriety. I don't think any one person, or band is going to be able to help curb or stop the horrible trend of music today-- but I hope bands like these who are actually talented might be able to have some impact.
Here's some stuff to check out if you're willing:
Sigh No More- Mumford & Sons
After the Storm- Mumford & Sons
Little Lion Man- Mumford & Sons (this song is actually getting quite popular)
Tighten Up- The Black Keys
The Best of Times- Sage Francis
Ke$ha is pure pop garbage. She rubs me the wrong way and I look forward to her disappearing. Hopefully soon.
ReplyDeleteTalyor Swift is a singer/songwriter, and I don't really think it is fair to put the two of them in the same category of "artist". She definitely doesn't sing about getting drunk or being a slut either.
The Jonas Brothers are interesting because they seem to be following in the footsteps of Hanson, who are arguably an underground band at this point in their career. Hanson plays out and releases albums regularly, and they are quite successful, but they are no longer played on the radio because their music is not "mainstream".
I can appreciate any artist that writes and plays their own music, even if they aren't exactly my cup of tea.
I may know Kesha's lyrics to her songs ( I mean its hard not to, shes not saying too much) but it doesn't mean I like her. Its scarey half the stuff that is allowed on the radio for kids to hear, like they can't distinguish what should be there instead of the song skipping or fading out for a quick second. I do have to agree with Anna I can't take any credit away from Taylor Swift since she practically writes all her own songs and can actually play the guitar. But I'm with you, I definitely look for music before it hits mainstream.. its raw and real. Can't wait to listen to your song suggestions!
ReplyDeleteokay, maybe it was a little unfair to throw T Swift under the bus. I'm just not a fan of the predictable, overdone stuff she comes out with. However, I do respect her for having a positive image for the younger generation, unlike Kesha, and others.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Jonas Brothers.. I don't know much about them. I would sort of categorize them the same way I would with Taylor and Beiber. Over-hyped pop stars. (I will admit, I was a huge Hanson fan back in the day. And maybe still today... it's a guilty pleasure.)
Oh, and Meg, you should take a listen to Fink. You might like him.
ReplyDeleteI just laugh at Beiber to be honest. He takes himself way to seriously. Did you see him perform at the VMAs? Oh Lord, was that the most pretentious lip-syched pop performance ever or what?
ReplyDeleteMy husband actually worked for the Jonas brother's once. They thought it was hilarious that his name was Jonah working for the Jonas. So they kind of hold a soft spot in my heart lol.
I agree. Where is the soul? I'm sick of Kesha, Beiber and Swift. Im not a fan of these big production videos and the competition of how many number one hits you can bust out within a few months. My favorite artist at the moment is Brett Dennen. He has soul and an awesome groove. He recently started gaining recognition for his music because one song was on Parenthood and another was on the series finale of Ugly Betty. His lyrics have substance and not all his songs sound alike! Check him out! (He's also awesome live)

Gotta love Sage Francis. He pretty much sealed the movie Pride and Glory as a classic for me. But I do like Tswift and Beiber...lol. I respect their talent and if the music industry wants to push them then so be it. I'll listen to them over Kesha anyway, she makes me sick and I pray she isn't really like that.
ReplyDeleteI have Brett Dennen on my ipod! I agree- I really like his sound!
ReplyDeleteThere's also Eric Hutchinson; I don't think he's really been all that popular, but he has a cool upbeat sound.
Oh! And I don't know if you guys have heard of Marc Broussard, but I saw him live and he was awesome. so much soul in that music. He has NOT had nearly the recognition he deserves.
check him out tooo =) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuWPseegaKw&feature=fvw
(something funny- on that youtube page next to the music video there was an ad for beiber. just saying. haha)
